You don’t have to wait until Thanksgiving to whip up delicious eats. Learn how to make sauces that will rival your grandma’s, discover the world of jam making, or learn everything you need to know about BBQ. There will be nine evening 49ͼ¿â Community College Creative Living fall culinary classes in September.

In "BBQ" you will look at different BBQ styles and preparations. Pellet grills, lump burning grills, charcoal, electric. Why are there so many, and when are they used? We also dive into the sauces of American BBQ. Tastings prepared in class. Held Monday, September 11, from 6-8 pm, this class will cost $75.

"Saucy" is all about sauces. The mother of sauces will be created in class, and we will also dive into the derivatives of these sauces. How and when to use what sauce and what additions will enhance our flavors. Small bites to taste sauces include chicken, beef, and broccoli. Held Friday, September 1, from 6-8 pm, this class will cost $75.

In "Savory Tarts," you will learn how to mix, shape, and create your own tart with seasonal ingredients. Chef Jason will teach you to make the perfect crust from scratch and how to prepare a classic quiche Lorraine for the class. Held Wednesday, September 13, from 6-8 pm, this class will cost $75.

"Knife Skills" will teach you to feel confident with a knife in the kitchen and help you reduce accidents by teaching sharpening and cutting techniques we can practice and use daily. Chicken wings and legs will be baked in class by students after learning how to break down a whole chicken. Held Friday, September 15, from 6-8 pm, this class will cost $75.

"Jam Making & Water Bath Canning" is a hands-on class designed to teach you to make fruit jam and relish. Also, learn the basics of water bath canning to continue preserving food for your pantry. Held Tuesday, September 12, from 5:30-7:30 pm, this class will cost $75.

In "Bakery-Style Breakfast," you will learn how to make delicious bakery quality morning goodies such as Cherry Almond Biscotti's, White Chocolate Raspberry Scones, and 3-Cheese Everything Bagels that will be sure to please. Held Monday, September 18, from 5:30-8 pm, this class will cost $75.

In "Tapas & Sangria," Chef Huggins will guide you through creating a variety of traditional Spanish tapas "small plates" to include Patatas Bravas, Stuffed Dates, and Spanish meatballs, plus a delicious Sangria to serve at your next party. Held Tuesday, September 19, from 5:30-7:30 pm, this class will cost $75.

"Sprouted Wheat Bread" will teach you how to make bread from Sprouted Wheat, sourced from a local mill and enriched with toasted pumpkin and Sunflower seeds. This organic whole wheat has many health benefits; you don't want to miss this class. Held Friday, September 22, from 5-8 pm, this class will cost $100.

In "Savory Souffles," you will be making two delicious savory souffles that, when done, you will be surprised at how easy it was. You will go home ready to make more. Held Tuesday, September 26, from 5:30-7:30 pm, this class will cost $75.

Registration

Seats are still available for these Workforce Continuing Education classes and do not require an application. To register, call Continuing Education at (910) 695-3980 between 8 am and 5 pm Mondays through Thursdays and 8 am-noon on Fridays. All major credit cards are accepted. Pre-register at sandhills.edu/wce/cereg.html. Pre-registration must be made two days before the start date of the class.

Next Session

Continuing Education classes begin throughout the semester. New and returning students do not need to apply to the College, simply register for class.

An eight-week session of fall semester curriculum classes begins on October 11. Offered online and in hybrid class formats, classes take only eight weeks to complete and award full credits. For all information, go to www.sandhills.edu/learn.

New students taking curriculum/college credit classes must apply before registering. 49ͼ¿â has an open-door policy, which means all applicants are accepted. On www.sandhills.edu, new students can find the application at the top right. Returning or current students can register by using Self-Service located on MySCC. 

Boys & Girls Club

A Boys & Girls Club unit is offered on the 49ͼ¿â campus. It runs from 2:30 to 6:30 pm for kindergarten through fifth grade. The club is ideal for parents/guardians taking SCC afternoon or evening classes, those who need study time, need to utilize the computer lab, or work on projects. Club participants will receive homework assistance, and dinner is offered. The cost is $40 per child per year. The club provides transportation from McDeeds Creek, Farm Life, and Carthage Elementary schools.

In addition, drop-in services are available free of charge to 49ͼ¿â students from 6-9 pm. This is ideal for students taking afternoon or evening classes, working on group projects, or for other academic reasons. Classes for High School Students

Moore and Hoke County High School students can take SCC classes as juniors and seniors at no cost. High school counselors can help schedule these classes or home or private school students can contact Kim McMillan at mcmillank@sandhills.edu.

Students who reside in Moore and Hoke Counties and successfully complete the required number of classes through 49ͼ¿â while in high school can qualify to receive two full years of paid tuition through our 49ͼ¿â Promise program. 49ͼ¿â awards over $350,000 to pay tuition and fees for 49ͼ¿â Promise students each year. The 49ͼ¿â Promise applications are due each year by mid-July.
