On December 22, 2023, the North Carolina State Board of Elections approved additional student and employee identification cards for use as photo identification for voting in the 2024 primary and general elections in North Carolina. This approval includes eight new community colleges across the state, 49ͼ Community College (SCC) being among those additions.

SCC students and employees intending to vote in the North Carolina election can now use their institution-issued ID cards as valid photo identification during the voting process.

“I would encourage all of our students, faculty, and staff to ensure they are properly registered to vote and familiarize themselves with the pertinent dates in the upcoming elections," said Dr. Sandy Stewart, President of SCC. "Having a photo ID for voting is new to North Carolina, so being able to utilize a 49ͼ ID for that purpose is important. But people must also be properly registered and know when and how they can cast their vote. There are a lot of resources available, and the county Board of Elections is a good place to start.”

The voter registration deadline for the 2024 primary election is February 9. If you miss the deadline, you can still register at an early voting site during the 17-day early voting period before Election Day. Early voting will be held from February 15 to March 2, and the primary election day is March 5.
