Get ready to soak up the sun and gain knowledge this summer at 49ͼ¿â Community College. Offered through the Workforce Continuing Education department, an exciting lineup of classes begin in June and July. Courses in Windows, the Internet, public safety, healthcare, trades, business, and transportation will be offered.

Transportation

"Auto Safety Inspection" certifies students to inspect motor vehicles under the NC Motor Vehicles Safety Inspection Law. The prerequisite for this class is a valid driver's license. Held Monday and Tuesday, June 12 and 13, from 6–10 pm, this class will cost $75.

"Commercial Learners Permit Prep" provides training in inspecting tractor-trailers and assuming driver responsibilities. Emphasis is placed on defensive driving, federal motor carrier safety regulations, vehicle systems, hours of service, and accident prevention. Upon completion, students should be able to demonstrate the knowledge to pass the required tests to obtain a class "A" learner's permit for the commercial driver's license. Held Monday-Thursday, June 12-15, from 6–10 pm, this class will cost $75.

"CDL Truck Driver Training" will provide students with comprehensive training in classroom instruction, range driving, and road driving. This 12-week training course will prepare students for the Class A Commercial Driver's License endorsement. The prerequisite for this course is "Commercial Learners Permit." Scholarships are available. 

"OBD Emissions Control Inspection" certifies students to inspect motor vehicles under the NC Motor Vehicles OBD Emissions Control Inspection Law. The prerequisite for this class is "Certified Auto Safety Inspection." This is also a Recertification Class. Held Monday and Tuesday, June 26 and 27, from 6–10 pm, this class will cost $75.

Business

"Notary Public" is required for anyone interested in becoming a Notary Public for the first time. There are several requirements; refer to sandhills.edu/flightpath for all information. "Notary Public" will be held on Tuesday, June 20, from 8 am-6 pm. This class will cost $75 plus the cost of the text.

Trades

"Construction Academy" is an 8-week course providing students with the OSHA 10 and NCCER Core certifications. Gain knowledge in employability skills while working on a construction project. Students will also be provided job shadowing opportunities at various local construction companies one day a week. Held Monday-Thursday, June 12-August 10, from 9 am-4 pm, this class will cost $211.50. Scholarships are available.  

"EPA Refrigerant Certification" will cover the requirements for the EPA certification examinations. Topics include small appliances, high-pressure systems, and low-pressure systems. Upon completion, students should be able to demonstrate knowledge of refrigerants and be prepared for the EPA certification exam. Held Monday and Wednesday, June 14-28, from 6-9 pm, this class will cost $77.50 plus $25 for the certification test due the night of testing.

"Welding Essentials" focuses on the fundamentals used in basic MIG and Stick welding. This class is designed to provide basic welding skills training. The focus is on safety and techniques, including metal cutting and fitting and welding skills using generally recognized industry processes. Held Tuesday and Thursday, July 11-November 2, from 1-4 pm, this class will cost $287.50.

In "Welding Level II," students will earn an industry-recognized NCCER Welding credential. Level II builds on Level I by introducing trainees to additional welding methods – including MIG and TIG – and more advanced welding techniques and concepts. The prerequisite for this class is "Welding Level I." Held Tuesdays and Thursdays from July 18-April 11, from 6-9 pm; this class will cost $311.50 plus the cost of the text.

Healthcare

"Nurse Aide Level 1 Refresher" is a 40-hour program for those whose listing has expired on the NC Nurse Aide I Registry or those with a state-recognized or military healthcare credential. There will be 10 hours of

required online work. You must attend all virtual meetings. Eligible individuals must have completed a state-approved Nurse Aide I program and have a certificate or transcript supporting completion. Held Monday-Thursday, July 17-27, from 8 am-1 pm, this class will cost $130 plus the cost of the text.

Public Safety

"EMT Basics" prepares students to provide emergency care for the sick and injured. Students will learn to respond to a variety of emergency medical situations. Upon successful completion, the student can sit for the state certification exam. Course requirements: a copy of your high school or GED diploma by the first night of class. Held at the Hoke Center, Monday and Wednesday 6-10 pm and alternating Saturdays from 8 am-5 pm, July 10-December 9, this class will cost $180 plus a $5 tech fee, a $31 uniform fee, and a clinical fee. 

"Fire Academy" will train students for a career as a firefighter. Certifications earned in the course are Firefighter I/II, Hazardous Materials Ops, Technical Rescuer, and Emergency Vehicle Driver. The program incorporates EMT-Basic and prepares students to sit for the state certification exam. Held Monday-Thursday 8:30 am-5 pm and Fridays 8 am-4 pm, July 11-December 15, this class is free for current volunteer firefighters.

In "TR Series for NC Wildlife and NC SHP" will present the Technical Rescuer (TR) with the knowledge, skills, and ability to satisfy the requirements of Chapter Five (General) and Chapter Six (Ropes) of NFPA 1006: Standard for Technical Rescue Professional Qualifications. Individual courses included in this block course are Rescue Operations, Anchors and MAS, Fixed Rope Systems, Health and Wellness, Helicopter Transport, Horizontal Systems, Lowers and Raises, Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), Rescue Equipment, Rope Basics, and Victim Management. This class will be held Monday-Thursday 8:30 am-5 pm, and Fridays 8 am-4 pm, June 27-October 13.

Windows

In "Windows- Level 1," students will learn the Windows operating system. Discover Windows applications, terminology, Start Menu functions, and operational basics. Students should have access to the Windows operating system and bring a flash drive. Held Monday and Wednesday, July 10-August 16, from 6-8 pm, this class will cost $75. 

Internet

"Getting Started with Google Drive" will introduce students to the basics of Google Drive as a file management resource, allowing you access to your files anytime you have internet access. Become familiar with Google's excellent office software suite, including Google Docs, Slides, Sheets, Drawings, and Forms. Learn to use Google's simple, flexible file and document-sharing features. Held Tuesdays and Thursdays, July 11-August 17, from 6-8 pm, this class will cost $75.

"Computer Basics 2" will build on what you learned in Computer Basics 1 to gain an even deeper understanding of computer hardware, software, using the internet, and more! The prerequisite for this course is "Computer Basics 1" or prior experience. Held Thursday, July 13-August 17, from 9-11 am, this class will cost $75.

Seats are still available for these Continuing Education classes and do not require an application. Fall Semester

The fall semester flightPath will be published on the 49ͼ¿â Community College website in mid-July (www.sandhills.edu/flightpath). It will contain information about all curriculum programs and the Continuing Education classes scheduled to begin August through December.

Curriculum classes will begin on August 14. In addition to the traditional 16-week semester, there will be two eight-week sessions, one beginning on August 14 and the second on October 11. Boys & Girls Club

A Boys & Girls Club unit is offered on the 49ͼ¿â campus. It runs from 2:30 to 6:30 pm for kindergarten through fifth grade. The Club is ideal for parents/guardians taking SCC afternoon or evening classes, those who need study time, need to utilize the computer lab, or work on projects. Club participants will receive homework assistance, and dinner is offered. The cost is $40 per child per year. The Club provides transportation from McDeeds Creek, Farm Life, and Carthage Elementary schools.

In addition, drop-in services are available free of charge to 49ͼ¿â students from 6-9 pm. This is ideal for students taking afternoon or evening classes, working on group projects, or for other academic reasons. Classes for High School Students

Moore and Hoke County High School students can take SCC classes at no cost as juniors and seniors. High school counselors can help schedule these classes or home or private school students can contact Elizabeth Yarrington at yarringtone@sandhills.edu.

Students who reside in Moore and Hoke Counties that successfully complete the required number of classes through 49ͼ¿â while in high school can qualify to receive two full years of paid tuition through our 49ͼ¿â Promise program. 49ͼ¿â awards over $350,000 to pay tuition and fees for 49ͼ¿â Promise students each year. Since its inception in the Fall of 2017, 1,504 students have participated in the 49ͼ¿â Promise. The 49ͼ¿â Promise applications are due each year by mid-July.
