Starting in February, we're beginning classes on auto safety inspection, notary services, CPR, and OBD Emissions Control. Additionally, a new class will be joining our Fire Academy. Transportation
"Auto Safety Inspection" certifies students to inspect motor vehicles under the NC Motor Vehicles Safety Inspection Law. The prerequisite for this class is a valid driver’s license. Held Monday and Tuesday, February 12 and 13, from 6-10 pm, this class will cost $75.
"OBD Emissions Control Inspection" certifies students to inspect motor vehicles under the NC Motor Vehicles OBD Emissions Control Inspection Law. The prerequisite for this class is “Certified Auto Safety Inspection.” This is also a Recertification Class. Held Monday and Tuesday, February 19 and 20, from 6-10 pm, this class will cost $75.
Business
"Notary Public" is required for anyone interested in becoming a Notary Public for the first time. It is recommended for all notaries as a refresher course. It is strongly recommended that you study the guidebook before class to better prepare for the state examination at the end of the class. Note: The current edition of The Notary Public Manual for North Carolina, March 2016, ISBN: 978-1-56011-851-0, is required for admittance to the class and can be purchased at the SCC bookstore or on Amazon. It is strongly recommended that you study the guidebook prior to class attendance to be better prepared for the state examination given at the end of the class.
NCGS 10B-5(b) provides the following requirements to be commissioned as a Notary Public in NC: 1) Be at least 18 years of age or legally emancipated as defined in Article 35 of Chapter 7B of the General Statutes; 2) Reside or have a regular place of work or business in this state; 3) Reside legally in the United States; 4) Speak, read, and write the English language; 5) Possess a high school diploma or equivalent; 6) Pass the course of instruction described in this Article unless the person is a licensed member of the North Carolina State Bar; 7) Purchase and keep as a reference the most recent manual approved by the Secretary that describes the duties and authority of notaries public; 8) Submit an application containing no significant misstatement or omission of fact. Students must provide current state or federal picture identification for admission to class. Active-duty military and civilian I.D. cards do not meet the identification requirement.
"Notary Public" will be held on Tuesday, February 20, from 8 am-6 pm; this class will cost $75 plus the cost of the text.
Public Safety
"CPR for Healthcare Providers" is for or healthcare professionals who need to know how to perform CPR and other lifesaving skills in a wide variety of in-hospital and out-of-hospital settings. Per AHA guidelines, CPR cards will be issued to students within 10 business days of class completion. Held Saturday, February 17, from 8:30 am-12:30 pm, this class will cost $50 plus a $5 card fee.
"Fire Academy" is a course for you to train for a career as a firefighter—free tuition for current volunteer firefighters. Certifications earned in the course are Firefighter I/II, Hazardous Materials Ops, Technical Rescuer, and Emergency Vehicle Driver. The program incorporates EMT-Basic and prepares students to sit for the state certification exam. Application packets are available at fireacademy.sandhills.edu or in the Continuing Education office in Van Dusen Hall. Next Semester
Continuing Education classes begin throughout the semester. New and returning students do not need to apply to the College, simply register for class.
An eight-week session of spring semester curriculum classes begins on March 11. Offered online and in hybrid class formats, classes take only eight weeks to complete and award full credits. For all information, go to www.sandhills.edu/learn.
New students taking curriculum/college credit classes must apply before registering. 49ͼ has an open-door policy, which means all applicants are accepted. On www.sandhills.edu, new students can find the application at the top right. Returning or current students can register by using Self-Service located on MySCC.
Boys & Girls Club
A Boys & Girls Club unit is offered on the 49ͼ campus. It runs from 2:30 to 6:30 pm for kindergarten through fifth grade. The club is ideal for parents/guardians taking SCC afternoon or evening classes, those who need study time, need to utilize the computer lab, or work on projects. Club participants will receive homework assistance, and dinner is offered. The cost is $40 per child per year. The club provides transportation from McDeeds Creek, Farm Life, and Carthage Elementary schools.
In addition, drop-in services are available free of charge to 49ͼ students from 6-9 pm. This is ideal for students taking afternoon or evening classes, working on group projects, or for other academic reasons.
